Drummers’ Paradise

Non-drummers playing drums:

 
 Your location is transformed into an astonishing tropical paradise, with up to 30 snare drum/cymbal sets, murals, graphics, lighting effects, props, professional sound system, theatrical black-outs, costumes and large screen video/computer effects.
           
Four formats are available: 

 
 Introduction to Drummers’ Paradise: 
40 – 50 minute session for up to 30 drummers -  maximum 6 sessions per day
 
Drummers’ Paradise:
2  hour session  for up to 30 drummers - maximum  2 sessions per day 4 hour session   for up to 30 drummers - 1 session per day
 
Drummers’ Paradise on Tour:  
1.5 hour session for up to 150 - maximum 2 sessions per day
 
Drummercize:                           
40 – 50 minute session for up to 30 drummers - maximum 6 sessions per day
 
 
Drum Clinic Descriptions
Introduction to Drummers’ Paradise 
(40 – 50 minutes:  30 drummers)

 
3 minutes:  
The participants enter Drummers’ Paradise, inundated by astounding lights and stimulating sounds. Key behavioural expectations and essential safet y rules are explained by Mr. Kingsmore.

                                    
15 minutes:             
Sergeant  Kay introduces his rapid drum lesson with 3 beats and 3
solos.  He deftly shows the drummers how to use the drums and cymbals as musical instruments.  Everyone plays drums to a fun song.
 
10 minutes:             
The drummers play their new beats to another age/cultural appropriate song
Sergeant Kay makes suggestions for improvements before the song is performed again.  The roles Ray assumes are clever and endearing.

A final song is led by another of the Sergeant’s curious cohorts, 

 
2 minutes:                    
Drummers tidy up their drum sets and are dismissed.

40 – 50 minute sessions can be repeated up to 6 times per day.

 

Drummers’ Paradise 
(2 to 4 hour sessions for 30 drummers)

 3 minutes:               
The participants enter Drummers’ Paradise, inundated by astounding lights and
stimulating sounds. Key behavioural expectations and essential safety rules are explained by Mr. Kingsmore.
                                  
15 minutes:

The drummers play their new beats to an age appropriate culturally sensitive song.
Sergeant Kay makes suggestions for improvements before the song is performed again. 
 
10 minutes:             
Sergeant Kay inexplicably announces that the true purpose of today’s session is to
capture Rasputin, as seen on screen, who has stolen the Royal jewellery.  An oddball collection of guest drummers (Ray in disguise) helps the drummer on their journey that stretches  from Broadway to the Planet Venus, with many amusing tuneful stops along the way.          
        
10 Minute Segments:  
Each segment, teaches how to drum, sing and dance to a new song.  Each song takes everyone one step closer to recovering the Royal Jewels.

 iTunes, provides an endless supply of songs and characters, from  Weezer`s Sweater Song to Ravel`s Bolero; from Michael Jackson`s ABC to a family version of Aqua`s Barbie Girl.  All lyrics and musical  themes are carefully scrutinized for educational and cultural suitability.

 
15 – 20 minutes: Video breaks - Selections include:

Drum Contest: So You Think You Can Drum Eh?
 
15 minutes:                  
Often rated as a favourite highlight, students show off their drumming on stage
under the lights.  Medals are awarded to those who rhythmically implement some of the day`s musical skills.

Ray has prepared a written teachers’ package for each grade division. These are based on the 2009 Ontario Arts Curriculum.  Teachers may evaluate the children’s responses, which can help generate some suitable grades for Music and/or English.  Teachers who provide Ray with class sets of letters will receive an email with personalized comments for each child.

Drummers’ Paradise On Tour:                                                           
 Presentations to large groups of up to 150 - 1.5 hours
There are drumsticks, drum pads and snare drums for up to 150 people at a time: 120 play on the pads with drum sticks, with 32 playing the drum sets. In a 75 minute session, each child should get to play the actual drums twice.  
   
32 drum and cymbal sets are arranged at the front of the venue
15 minutes:   
Pupils enter the location, greeted by a stimulating robotic drumming video.

5 minutes:      
Behavioural expectations and essential safety rules are explained by Mr. Kingsmore.

 
20 minutes:    
Drumming with Sergeant Kay:

Using verbal percussion, the Sergeant has the entire group singing three drum beats and three solos. Everyone uses their hands to “play” the beats.
 
20 minutes: 
32 drummers  are selected to play the same beats on the drum sets.   Music is added, and the snare drummers and all the Air drummers play along to one or two songs.

 
15  minutes:  
Additional songs are played by new volunteers.  Please see above for possible song selections.
 
5 minutes:     
Dismissal

 
Total clinic time:  80-90  minutes          

Two presentations can be made each day

 
 
Drummercize:  
(40 – 50 minute session for up to 30 drummers)     

 
This is a popular Physical Education drum clinic.  Up to 30 snare drums are arranged in rows in the gymnasium. 
 
5 minutes:     
The pupils enter the gym to the sounds of exciting, rhythmic music. Behavioural expectations and essential safety rules are explained by Mr. Kingsmore.

 
2 minutes:      
Sergeant Kay goes over key safety and behavioural concepts.

 
2 minutes:       
Warm up and stretching session

 
5 minutes:      
Drummercize begins. Then the students move their bodies all over the gym.  Everybody
returns to their drum frequently to play simple rhythms while jumping, walking around their drum, kneeling and just having a blast while making use of large muscles in time to great music. Pupils will run march, dance, fly like birds and scramble like animals.  Heart rates will rise while calories will disappear.
 
1 minute:         
Brief Rest period

 
15 Minutes:     
Up to 3 more Drummercize songs are played, with a short rest period between each.

 
5 minutes:       
Cool down movements, to return heart rates to normal.
